The manufacturer SUD COMPOSITES manufactured long-distance cruising catamarans in plywood-epoxy-glass for 10 years (the GRAND SUD from 40 to 52′) before embarking on the construction in small series of the famous SWITCH 51′. The twenty examples built constitute an exception in the French multihull landscape because, made on Airex vinyl ester glass foam sandwich molds (already in 2000!) in personalized variations around an exemplary chassis with contained weight (from 10 to 13t depending on armament and supplies). Vacuum is used everywhere, vinyl ester resin is an expensive choice but its mechanical and sealing qualities justify this choice. The live works are made of monolithic vinyl ester glass to allow rational grounding on skeg to protect the propellers and rudders. The carpentry entirely integrated into the site is superb, the manufacturing quality well above the standards of the time. This very well equipped and maintained example is a modern multihull whose electrical installation and equipment rival the best contemporary achievements. The Switch 51 is a fast, safe and reliable catamaran; its timeless and unostentatious line is a success. This boat represents one of the best possible choices on the world market for the informed enthusiast for a long-distance cruising program.
