PAIR OF TWINS 38′

Here is a Dutch catamaran built by naval architect Harm Veenema for his own personal use. Purchased in 2024 by its current owners for an Atlantic crossing that went perfectly, the boat is now for sale as they seek a larger multihull for a new project. It is an unconventional vessel in the best sense of the word; solidly built and described by its skipper as reasonably fast, comfortable, and safe. It relies on hull lines optimized in a towing tank for lateral resistance, rather than having external daggerboards or keels. Designer Harm Veenema, in collaboration with Professor Gerritsma (head of the Delft testing tank), created a unique hull shape that performs well even without keels—a fact confirmed by the owner’s experience during his long voyage. Additionally, construction plans exist for the retrofitting of retractable daggerboards.
The distinctive hull shape, featuring protected rudders, makes the boat ideal for hauling out. The owner notes that it sails upwind just as well as any fin-keel catamaran but accelerates more quickly. The single VW Marine engine connects to a lifting drive system; once the drives are raised, nothing protrudes below the waterline, resulting in weight savings and reduced wetted surface area compared to twin saildrives.
